T...Ano Nymous (the great Greek prophet, no doubt),<br /><br />Thanks for looking at the blog and the comment. Words, unfortunately, are fungible to an extent (just ask any politician). If we misuse a word long enough, such that it works its way into the lexicon, the misuse becomes standard. For example, the word "partner" is now a verb as well as a noun. One might argue (in fact, one does) that the "V" in latin has been mispronounced for centuries, so to have lost it's "W-ness." Even Henry Beard acknowledges this when he notes, "[R]emember, there aren't any Romans around to correct your pronunciation." And anyway, "Veni, Vidi, Vici" sounds so much more befitting a true heroic conqueror than an Elmer Fuddian "weni, widi, wici (wabbit)."<br /><br />The real point is, there are about as many Latin scholars at the boatyard as there are heroic conquerors and there, "lignum vitae" is pronounced "lignum vahy-tee." Mr. Tulp might have saved Latin had he spent more time in the boatyard, but my guess is that they would have just set him to work with a caulking hammer.Jim Thoenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10510285134431531384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7443240051994995672.post-71083070464579750482014-02-18T18:38:20.148-08:002014-02-18T18:38:20.148-08:00The boatyard pronounciation of vitae as WEE-tay is...The boatyard pronounciation of vitae as WEE-tay is the way the Romans would have pronounced it. All v's in Latin are pronounced as if they were w's according to "Latin for all Occasions" by Henry Beard and Mr Tulp who tried to teach me Latin for two long years. Despite my best efforts I actually learned some anyway.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
